The School: The school began operations in January 2010, however the director has over a dozen years of experience with Spanish Immersion programs. Most of the staff had also worked together previously and therefore the unity and cohesion of the team is one of a well oiled machine.
Staying outside of the tourist area in order to maximize the exposure to Spanish speaking situations, the school is located in a well appointed commercial building located on Ponce de Leon (the main City avenue) towards the end of Hato Rey, the business district and just a couple blocks from Rio Piedras, the University district. Access to the school is on the Urban Train a light rail system that operates between Bayamon and Santurce, created to bring workers from the suburbs into the business district the school benefits largely from its accessibility. Students find it easy to manage, clean and reliable
Start Dates: Classes start every Monday, unless it is a holiday, please check the calendar page.
Teachers: All Spanish instructors are native speakers with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and second language teaching experience. They are a group of dedicated and experienced educators who will lead student towards a higher proficiency in the Spanish language. Using a variety of creative teaching techniques and resources, instructors adapt classroom activities to cater to all learning styles, facilitating a stimulating and motivating environment.
Our Approach: We use the Communicative Approach to Spanish language learning. The focus of this approach is to learn to speak Spanish in meaningful contexts that you may encounter in real-life situations.
Student Centered Instruction: Our teachers are not there to lecture, but to provide opportunities for the student to learn and acquire Spanish. The students are expected to put effort in communicating in the target language and I.S.L.A. will supply the tools to achieve that goal. Second language acquisition depends on a myriad of variables; we will work with the student at their learning speed and scaffold learning for language success. While the atmosphere in the classroom is generally relaxed, students are not exempt from the responsibility of working hard and participating fully.
Group Lessons: Course instruction is conducted 5 days a week, 3 hours per day. Classes will be held Monday – Friday 9:00am-12:00pm. Teachers will track student progress on a weekly basis. Maximum group enrollment is 7 students, the average being 3 per group.
Private Lessons: If you have very little time available or have specialized language needs, you may prefer to concentrate on Spanish in one-to-one tutoring sessions. Private classes may be scheduled for as many hours as the student desires and for as long as requested. This program is available for every level, although more recommended for higher level students.
Combination: Many students prefer to experience a little bit of both options, group lessons for the interaction and private lessons to concentrate on their specific set of goals and language needs. I.S.L.A. is proud to offer the best selling combination course; students partake in the Group Lessons and then add 1 private lesson daily which takes place right after the group class.

“I had an amazing experience studying Spanish with I.S.L.A. It was my first time studying Spanish abroad and I felt like a family member as soon as I arrived to school from the first day!”
